Chargers Quarterback Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei Each Talk About Their Mindset Ahead of Final Preseason Game

The Los Angeles Chargers have had a good preseason thus far, with some solid performances from some players, but also some inconsistent performances from other players. With that in mind, the preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams should give a better idea of where certain competitions stand.

One competition in particular is the backup quarterback competition between Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei, who have both had their moments in the preseason. However, only one of them will win the QB2 battle and be the backup to Justin Herbert.

With that said, both Lance and Uiagalelei talked about their mindset heading into the final preseason game during Wednesday's media availability.

First, let's take a look at what Lance said and how he may approach this final game of the preseason as he aims to win the QB2 job.

"Play on time, play confident, just take it one play at a time, and hopefully, you know, give these guys an opportunity to show what they can do," Lance stated.

This is a solid statement from Lance as he talked about the fact that wants to play confident, on time, and relaxed, but also wants to give the other players on this roster an opportunity to demonstrate their talent and potentially make the final 53-man roster.

In terms Lance's performance this preseason, he has been solid as he has completed 22/36 passes for 237 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. On the ground, Lance has totaled five carries for 69 yards which has led to an average of 13.8 yards per carry.

Overall, Lance has been good, but his lone interception is not ideal, especially with zero touchdowns and while Uiagalelei has no turnovers at all. However, Lance's effectiveness on the ground has been a good sign and could help him tonight if he can utilize his legs against the Rams' defense.

So, heading into this final preseason game, if Lance can take care of the ball well, utilize his legs, and lead a few scoring drives, he could put himself in a good position to win the QB2 job, but how Uiagalelei plays will be just as important as to who wins this competition.

On that note, it is time to take a look at how Uiagalelei wants to approach the preseason finale and what his mindset is as he hopes to become the Chargers backup quarterback.

"For me, man, just go out there and just let it rip, play loose, spin the ball. Just make some good passes and be able to lead the teammates, man. Be able to be a great leader, a great teammate, rally guys around me, and be able to uplift teammates to their highest potential," Uiagalelei said.

Similar to Lance, Uiagalelei talked wanting to just go out there and play, but specifically he talked about getting the ball out and making reads. Also like Lance, Uiagalelei emphasized the importance of helping his teammates and being able to help lead them and play the best they possibly can.

This late in the preseason, each player on the roster bubble is doing everything they can to play well and having quarterbacks like Uiagalelei and Lance is a huge benefit for everyone as it gives the other players confidence and should put these players in great positions to succeed.

Now looking at Uiagalelei's performance this preseason, he has been playing very well as he has completed 15/24 passes for 200 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. As a rusher, Uiagalelei's only carry was a five yard loss, but it seemed like a miscommunication between him and the running back more than anything.

As Uiagalelei prepares for the final preseason game, if he can continue to be accurate and protect the ball, and potentially create a few explosive plays, that should give him a great shot to win the QB2 job, but if Lance plays well also, naming the backup quarterback could be very difficult.

So, when the Chargers and the Rams match up tonight, it will be interesting to watch how Lance and Uiagalelei perform and if one of them clearly wins the QB2 job or if this competition gets even tighter and forces Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel to make the call based on the entirety of camp.
