Christopher Vizzina entered the 2026 college football season as the Clemson Tigers' starting quarterback, but the experiment didn't even last a full two weeks.

After a dreadful performance in Clemson's season-opening loss to LSU, Vizzina suffered an elbow injury during the first half of the Tigers' Week 2 win over Georgia Southern.

Tait Reynolds relieved Vizzina and guided Clemson to a 22-7 victory and was then handed the starting job going into Week 3 against North Carolina.

Head coach Dabo Swinney made it abundantly clear that Reynolds swiping the job from Vizzina was not due to injury; he simply felt that Reynolds was the better man.

But as for Vizzina? Well, the redshirt junior is still not healthy yet.

When asked who is the Tigers' primary backup quarterback at the moment heading into Week 5, Swinney told reporters that it's Trent Pearman, noting that Vizzina is not 100 percent healed.

Regardless, it seems like Vizzina's tenure at Clemson is just about over.

Reynolds is a true freshman and Swinney loves him so barring Reynolds absolutely tanking over the next several weeks, he will remain under center even when Vizzina gets right.

Vizzina arrived at Clemson as a four-star recruit in 2023 and was expected to serve as the successor to Cade Klubnik. He made one start last season and looked rather impressive in a loss to SMU, which helped build some confidence in the Birmingham, Al. native.

However, that trust evaporated after the Tigers were hammered 51-10 in Baton Rouge.

It also didn't help Vizzina's case that Reynolds gave him a very strong push in spring practice and fall camp, and you could tell that Swinney actually wanted to name Reynolds the starter under center.

But Swinney understandably went with the more experienced player and figured that if he didn't like what he saw, he could make a change.

It apparently didn't take Swinney very long to pull the trigger.

Clemson has now won three straight games, most recently defeating California on the road last Friday. Reynolds did not play particularly well in the victory and is still clearly learning, but Swinney loves the youngster's potential.

The Tigers will now face the Miami Hurricanes in a showdown at Memorial Stadium this Saturday in what will represent the biggest test of Reynolds' young career to date.

Should Clemson manage to pull off the colossal upset, it would completely turn the tide of a season that looked lost a month ago.
