Clemson Tigers' Dabo Swinney Reveals Harsh QB Reality

The Clemson Tigers are entering 2026 with some uncertainty under center following the departure of Cade Klubnik.

Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds are competing for the starting quarterback job in fall camp, and the prevailing thought is that Vizzina will win the competition.

But it won't be easy.

Head coach Dabo Swinney has made it abundantly clear that he won't just be handing the job to Vizzina, and he has also regularly sung the praises of Reynolds, a true freshman.

The national media doesn't appear too confident in Vizzina, that's for sure, and Swinney revealed a harsh reality for the redshirt junior this week.

“Whoever got him [if Vizzina had entered the transfer portal], they’d be writing all these great articles about this great quarterback that we got from Clemson,” Swinney said, via The Clemson Insider. “But because he stayed, he gets downplayed. That’s just the nature of this world we’re living in right now. It just is.”

Vizzina is a former four-star recruit who was once viewed as Klubnik's heir, so the fact that there are now so many question marks surrounding him does kind of prove Swinney's point.

The Birmingham, Al. native made one start in 2025, going 29-for-42 with 317 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to SMU.

That was the only start Vizzina has made since arriving at Clemson in 2023, so there is no question the 6-foot-4 signal-caller is unproven.

“The guys respect CV,” Swinney said. “They respect him, because he’s done the work. He’s respected. But he also has a lot to prove, right? He’s got to go do it. I can’t give it to him. Nobody can. You’ve got to earn it. Players know. They know – game knows game.”

Vizzina is the frontrunner to open the season at quarterback for the Tigers, but you get the feeling that Swinney will have a quick hook if things don't go well early on.

Reynolds has made quite the impression on Swinney, and Swinney seems eager to see what he can do on the field.

Clemson will open up at LSU on Sept. 5.
