College Football biggest fallers after Week 6

Week 6 was a rough one for several college football programs, with teams struggling in games they needed to win. Some suffered shocking losses, while others simply failed to match expectations in disappointing performances.

These four teams stood out as the biggest fallers of the weekend after failing to get the job done when it mattered most.

One game is an aberration, but two games is a trend. After getting walloped by Missouri last week, a major bounce-back was expected as the Gators hosted South Carolina in Week 6. They didn’t bounce back; they just sank further down.

The Gamecocks loaded the box and shut down Jadan Baugh, and LaNorris Sellers had his best passing game of the season against the Florida secondary. What was once a darling feel-good turnaround in year one for Jon Sumrall is now just looking like more of the same in Gainesville.

Texas

This is the perfect example of a result where the correct interpretation is Texas as a “Faller” and not Oklahoma as a “Riser.” Oklahoma is still a bad football team. They did nothing to prove otherwise. But Texas gifted them a special teams TD and a pick-6. Oklahoma’s only offensive TD was on a drive that was extended by two Texas penalties. Texas also missed a potential game-winning field goal right after the two-minute warning.

Texas was and is the better football team. But they did so many baffling things that they allowed a bad Oklahoma team to beat them, and that is scary for a team that still has Missouri, Ole Miss, and LSU on the schedule. These problems are all fixable, but it starts with Steve Sarkisian fixing the discipline and special teams issues, and Arch Manning getting the offense to perform more consistently.

Unbeaten ACC Teams

We are only in Week 6, and somehow Miami is the only ACC team that is left unbeaten in conference play. Ironically, Wake Forest and Clemson, whose only losses are to Miami, are now 2nd and 3rd in the conference standings.

Duke had to go on the road and play a gloomy-weather game against Georgia Tech. Not even a spectacular performance against Nate Sheppard could save them. Meanwhile, Pitt debuted backup QB Holden Geriner after the season-ending injury to Mason Heintschel, and North Carolina pulled the upset and notched the first AP top-25 win of the Bill Belichick era. There’s a reason that ACC stands for Always Chaos Conference!

Florida State

At one point Friday night, the Seminoles led Louisville 14-0 and had the ball 2nd and goal at the 3-yard line. They came away with no points, and Isaac Brown immediately took off on a 97-yard TD run.

That was the first of 35 unanswered points from the Cardinals, as Florida State got dominated over the last 3 quarters of the game. What started out looking like a turning point in the Mike Norvell era ended as potentially one of his final games as Florida State Head Coach, as his hot seat is only getting hotter.
