Week six featured some critical contests that will go a long way toward deciding who participates in the Mountain West Championship Game when December rolls around. Along the way, we saw some outstanding performances from across the league. Did Oregon State continue to dominate the offensive awards? Did Boise State get the job done on defense? Let’s find out in this week’s awards.
Offensive Player of the Week
Dylan Riley (Boise State)
This was a tough one to choose this week, as Braden Atkinson and Jesse Legree were both deserving. I went with Riley because this was a bigger game, and he delivered against a better opponent. Riley’s 72-yard touchdown on Boise State’s opening drive set the tone for a Broncos offense that scored on seven of its eight offensive drives. Riley finished with 150 rushing yards and another 64 receiving yards while scoring two touchdowns. The nation’s leader in rushing yards continues to put together an outstanding season.
Also considered: Braden Atkinson (Oregon State), Jesse Legree (Oregon State)
Defensive Player of the Week
Asher Cunningham (Utah State)
Cunningham had the best game of his career in Utah State’s 17–16 win over Washington State. He finished with 17 tackles, half a sack, two tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery. The junior linebacker was dominant throughout the game, playing a major role in limiting the Cougars’ rushing attack while consistently pressuring quarterback Caden Pinnick.
Also considered: K’Vion Thunderbird (Fresno State), Jabri Odoemenem (Oregon State)
Special Teams Player of the Week
Canaan Moore (Boise State)
The freshman placekicker made the difference in Boise State’s 38–31 victory over Fresno State. Moore connected on all three of his field goal attempts, including a long of 49 yards. His late fourth-quarter kick helped seal the win for the Broncos.
Also considered: Jack Stevens (Washington State), Jaylon Hawkins (San Diego State)
Freshman of the Week
Jesse Legree (Oregon State)
The freshman wide receiver continued to make his case as an All-American and a Heisman Trophy contender with another outstanding performance in Oregon State’s dominant 66–14 win over San Diego State. Legree showcased his ability to make plays after the catch, finishing with 10 receptions for 191 yards and three touchdowns. He now leads the nation in receiving yards, further cementing his status as one of the most exciting young players in college football.
