With all of the talk around the College Football Playoff potentially expanding, the discourse around transfer portal rules being adjusted to allow for at least some sort of control, and the never-ending NIL arms race, the players and how long they can play shouldn't be dismissed.
Currently, players have four years of eligiblity, but as we have come to find out, that can turn into five, six, seven, or even eight in some rare cases due to redshirts, medical redshirts, and taking the NCAA to court over what really counts as a year of utilized eligibility.
In a move that could create some wrinkles in years of eligibility, the head coaches in the FBS have voted unanimously to expand how many games a player can play while still utilizing a redshirt to preserve a year of eligibility. They voted to allow players to compete in nine games, as opposed to the current rule, four games, and still utilize a redshirt.

Now, just because the coaches have voted for this, it doesn't set it in stone. This is simply a recommendation that will be taken to the committees who ultimately decide if this is a reasonable request to implement or if it shall stay at four games or fewer to redshirt.
This move could push the NCAA to turn to the popular idea of giving every player five seasons of eligibility from the time they begin college, and whatever happens in those five years happens. It could clear up redshirting, get rid of the charade that college football is still about being a student-athlete looking for an education, and let teams develop younger talent much earlier in their careers.
