College Football Is Nearing Playoff Expansion, Good for Penn State but Bad for the Sport

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported on Thursday afternoon that there is a monumental shift coming for the sport of college football. The conference committees and the College Football Playoff are close to an agreement on an expansion of the CFP from 12 teams to 24, effective in the 2027 season.

I'm not kidding when I say that this is a complete and total disaster.

The saying goes, hogs get fed, and pigs get slaughtered. This, in my opinion, is the slaughtering of the pig.

Everyone has lost control of college football in the past five years. It began with the rightful advent of NIL, and then stuff started to get out of hand.

Players started getting paid, and so TV contracts had to go up so that schools could pay players, and then the TV companies wanted more inventory, and so now these amateurs are playing 16 games per season.

Now, because of the success of the College Football Playoff, they are expanding it to 24 teams and adding two more rounds of football to the playoff.

If it wasn't already frustrating enough that there are only about 5 teams that have a legitimate chance to win the title every year, we want to get rid of games like Penn State versus SMU (38-10) and Penn State vs. Boise State (31-14), and we want more games like Ohio State vs. Miami or Notre Dame vs. Georgia.

A 24-team playoff will add about eight more of these games per every single postseason. Not only that, it basically renders the regular season completely worthless. Four-loss teams would basically be a shoo-in for the postseason at that point.

If we were to look around the country at Notre Dame and look at their schedule, they simply don't have four losses on their schedule. At most, they have two.

Ohio State has the hardest schedule in recent history this year, and at maximum, they would have four losses and would get into the playoff.

Go down to the SEC, where the Florida Gators just got blown out in two straight games. Guess what? They would still be in the Playoff conversation.

It is one of the dumbest and truly tone-deaf moves you will ever see. College Football fans are in a fragile spot right now. They are sick of every conversation being about money; they are frustrated with the people behind the scenes just pulling the strings; they hate the discrepancy between the top five teams that spend $35-plus million and the rest of the country.

Want to turn the casual fan off, do this and make every game meaningless. This is a disaster of a scenario and it sounds like it is on the one yard line of going into effect.
