College Football Playoff odds for LSU take massive hit after Ole Miss loss

Lane Kiffin and LSU football might mathematically still be alive for the College Football Playoff, but Ole Miss significantly crushed their chances.

Kiffin and Co. entered Saturday night with a legitimate shot at being one of the best teams in college football. However, LSU’s crushing loss at Ole Miss hurts the SEC team in more ways than one.

The Tigers went from having over a 51 percent shot at making the CFP to nearly 28 percent after the loss. ESPN’s Playoff Predictor now shifts to Kiffin and his team only boasting about a one-in-four chance of making the 12-team playoff.

It’s certainly not impossible for LSU to bounce back, but their road to the postseason won’t be easy in Kiffin’s first season in charge.

The SEC already boasts a tough group of teams all competing for places in this season’s CFP. However, Ole Miss is only strengthening its own case for the playoff after beating LSU in Oxford.

Meanwhile, LSU still needs to compete with other top teams like Alabama, Georgia, Texas and Texas A&M for those valuable positions. The Tigers have four ranked opponents left on their schedule this season, which does give them a shot.

LSU faces three straight ranked teams in November, which will ultimately decide their fate this season. Although, Kiffin and his group will likely need to run the table the remainder of the campaign in order to secure a postseason place.

It’s clear that LSU needs to get back to the drawing board though after their disappointing showing vs. Ole Miss. Kiffin certainly won’t want this stain on his legacy to last long, especially in his first season in Baton Rouge.
