College football rankings after Week 5: Updated Coaches Poll, AP Top 25 for SEC

Week 5 in the Southeastern Conference saw a pair of the breakout quarterbacks go head-to-head in one of the conference's two matchups featuring teams ranked in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

In the end, though, it was Keelon Russell who won that top-25 matchup in Starkville, Mississippi, as the Crimson Tide quarterback led No. 7 Alabama to a 56-23 win over Kamario Taylor and No. 16 Mississippi State. Russell completed 16-of-22 passes for 285 yards and three touchdown passes, adding a 17-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter.

The win for Alabama moves its record against ranked opponents to 9-3 under Kalen DeBoer.

No. 8 Florida suffered its first loss in SEC play in a surprising beatdown by No. 25 Missouri. The Tigers solved the riddle of defending Gators running back Jadan Baugh, who finished with 13 rushing yards on 12 carries. The Gators as a whole finished with just 42 rushing yards on 25 attempts.

Elsewhere, Georgia kept it going with a 38-14 win over Vanderbilt, while Kentucky raised the temperature on Shane Beamer's seat at South Carolina with a 35-34 overime win vs the Gamecocks that saw the Wildcats set the record for largest overcome deficit on the road (17-0). Texas and Oklahoma were both on bye ahead of their Week 6 clash in the Red River Rivalry on Saturday, Oct. 10 in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl. Ole Miss was also on bye this past week.
