College Football Saturdays Are Officially Back

There are plenty of signs that college football season is finally here.
But nothing quite makes it feel official like hearing the College GameDay theme on Saturday morning.
And this weekend, it’s finally back.
ESPN’s College GameDay will begin its 40th season Saturday morning in Baton Rouge ahead of Clemson’s massive Week 1 matchup against No. 11 LSU. The show begins at 9 a.m. ET before the Tigers kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
But this isn’t just another Week 1 appearance.
This will be College GameDay’s 500th road show.
That’s an incredible milestone for a show that has essentially become part of the fabric of college football.
GameDay originally debuted in 1987, but the show didn’t go on the road until November 13, 1993, when it traveled to South Bend for the legendary No. 1 Florida State vs. No. 2 Notre Dame matchup.
More than three decades later, the show has traveled to 82 different schools across 39 states, along with unique locations ranging from Ireland to Times Square and even Augusta National.
And honestly, there probably isn’t a better place for No. 500 than Baton Rouge.
This will be the 15th time LSU has hosted College GameDay and the first since Alabama came to town in 2024. LSU has been one of GameDay’s featured teams 36 previous times, going 22-14 in those games.
Now add everything surrounding Saturday’s game.
It’s Clemson vs. LSU.
It’s the beginning of the Lane Kiffin era at LSU.
It’s Week 1.
It’s Death Valley.
And by the time GameDay packs everything up Saturday afternoon, we’ll only be a few hours away from Clemson and LSU kicking off under the lights.
GameDay will also look a little different without Lee Corso, whose final regular appearance came last season. But Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, Nick Saban and the rest of the crew are back for another season. Herbstreit is also celebrating his 30th anniversary on the show.
College GameDay has become much more than three hours of predictions and analysis.
It’s the signs.
It’s the students showing up before sunrise.
It’s the guest picker.
It’s thousands of fans packed together on campus.
It’s waking up Saturday morning, turning on ESPN and realizing you have an entire day of college football ahead of you.
And after another long offseason, we finally get that feeling again this weekend.
College GameDay is back.
And for its historic 500th road show, there aren’t many places more fitting than Death Valley.
