We had college football on Saturday, so that makes it time for the first College Football Sunday Summary of the season. And yes, we will overreact, as we are prone to doing when we have such small sample sizes to work with for our analysis.

College Football Sunday Summary: Our Week 0 Overreactions

The Saturday schedule was news to Josh Pate. If you don’t know Josh’s work, you have not missed a lot, but he did just get a new show at ESPN.

Josh put this on his Twitter/X account Saturday morning, as he wrote there was only one more week until college football.

Week Zero games were not big on his radar. Ironically, as he was posting this, his new bosses at ESPN were getting to show North Carolina and TCU from Ireland.

Hey, He Got a TV Gig with His Wisdom

Former college football quarterback Max Browne was going to be the game analyst for NC State and Virginia. He was on the four-letter network in the morning, adding some perspective. Of North Carolina State quarterback CJ Bailey, Browne said, “If he plays like he thinks he can, he can have a really good season.” Well, that made us all smarter, didn’t it? So let me get this straight. Bailey thinks he can be good. And if he plays like that, then it turns out he can be good. Stunning.

Speaking Of…

Bailey’s team, NC State, went to Charlottesville and got taken apart by Virginia. The aforementioned CJ Bailey, who was 12 of 23 passing for 84 yards and an interception. Max Browne was not available for comment after the game. At ACC media days, NC State coach Dave Doeren called Bailey the best quarterback in the country. Coach hyperbole aside, Bailey has a long way to go to get to average, based on Saturday’s game.

This game had originally been scheduled to be played in Brazil. But ticket sales were virtually nonexistent. So, it was returned to its natural habitat in Charlottesville. The result? UVA got its first sellout in nearly two decades.

There is a lot to be excited about with the Cavaliers. Quarterback Beau Pribula threw for 155 yards with two touchdowns and ran for another 110 yards. The UVA offensive line was a force. UVA was seconds away from winning the ACC championship last year, and this team may be better and is the most experienced, in terms of snaps, in the country.

Travel Time

While NC State and UVA bailed out on Brazil, TCU and North Carolina played in Ireland. It was a heck of a grudge game. Oh, they don’t have a grudge with each other. But both programs are mired in internal grudges.

TCU is feuding with the local media, and UNC feuds over the program, the direction of football under Bill Belichick, and why Jordon Hudson needs to file so many Freedom of Information Act requests with the school.

TCU did not like the coverage from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram of an assault in the locker room, and the resulting dismissal of a player during Fall camp. They stripped the reporter Steven Johnson of his credentials and have shut out the newspaper from access to the program. The Star-Telegram is the only local coverage of the Horned Frogs.

Head coach Sonny Dykes once had a reputation for being media-friendly and accommodating when he was at SMU. But this has been bungled beyond belief.

And then the two teams went out and put on a game that neared NATO intervention in Ireland because it was just ugly.

TCU was an eight-and-a-half-point favorite. The over-under on total points was 46.5. The two teams combined for all of 25 points, and UNC won 15-10. Belichick nearly broke a smile coming off the field.

And if you are TCU, you not only fell well below expectations, both on and off the field. But you are going to hear this stat a lot for the next week. The last four teams that lost the Ireland game finished with a combined 17-31 record.

Tough Win For a Tough Crowd

It’s hard to know what to make of Florida State and the job security for head coach Mike Norvell.

Some Seminole fans have already given up on Norvell’s tenure heading the program. The team, and specifically the playcalling, was booed a few times at home Saturday in the game against a bad New Mexico State team.

Transfer quarterback Ashton Daniels was 17 of 27 passing for 202 yards, one touchdown and one interception. But the offense also had 217 rushing yards. And hey, the Noles won 34-17. But the discontent with the program is winning the over-under.

The Last Word

We are not naïve. We know AI is a fact of life. Writers/reporters here are banned from using it in their content. Our biggest issue is that AI sources do not fact-check what they give you. They scan articles on your topic and spit out the results, whether they are correct or not. It is called AI Slop. And it bites you in the backside. Yahoo Sports found out Friday. The site houses outstanding reporters like Ross Dellenger. But in syndication, some sites also get some random writers sitting in an internet café on the other side of the globe, and the writer used AI to fulfill his assignment, seen below.

The problem, of course, for those here who actually follow college football. There were no Big 10 games Thursday. The writer, based on their lack of knowledge and use of AI, did not know that Northwestern State and Northwestern aren’t the same school. And no one in the editing/pre-publish process caught the error. But hey, it’s only your reputation as a credible source for sports news.
