Cherry Creek showed why they’re the top-ranked team in the state, Valor Christian lost to national power Mater Dei but showed they belong on the big stage and talented junior quarterback Theo Lee set a new school record.
Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state title. Below are the top 25 Colorado high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of September 6.
1. Cherry Creek (2-0)
In a rematch of last year’s State Championship Game, the Bruins blew out Ralston Valley 38-7.
Quarterback Bentley Unruh was almost perfect, completing 10-of-12 passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns. Wyoming commit Alijah Landrum-Hamilton was his favorite target, catching five passes for 59 yards and three touchdowns. Super junior running back Elijah Cromwell had 100 all-purpose yards and a touchdown, and fellow junior running back Chance Phillips added 75 yards on the ground and a score. The offensive line, led by UCLA commit Jackson Roper, was able to dominate in the trenches and rushed for 213 yards on the night. Cherry Creek will host No. 10-rated Legend on Friday.
2. Valor Christian (2-1)
The Eagles battled but dropped a tough one to national West Coast power Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei 38-22. Quarterback Titus Huard was under a lot of duress but still completed 21-34 for 202 yards and three touchdowns. He made some big throws late, and receiver Jackson Coleman had seven catches for 81 yards and a touchdown, and Everett Kieschnick caught seven passes for 79 yards and looks like a legitimate prospect in his own right. The Eagles have a bye this weekend before hosting Cherry creek in two weeks in a battle of the state’s top two teams.
3. Grandview (3-0)
Grandview had a big 45-17 win Fountain-Fort Carson. The Wolves scored touchdowns in a variety of ways, including on the ground, through the air, on a kickoff return, and a pair of scoop-and-scores by the defense. Junior Timothy Arnold had a big game, with five catches for 103 yards and a touchdown and another 51 yards in the return game. Maddox Johnson had a team-high 58 yards on the ground and a touchdown. The Wolves have a bye this weekend and will play at No. 9 ranked Arapahoe on September 18.
4. Eaglecrest (3-0)
The Raptors moved to 3-0 with a 17-14 win over Erie. Running back Clyde Surrell and two-way athlete JayAnthony Green each had touchdown catches in this one. The Raptors have a bye this weekend and will host Cherokee Trail on September 17.
5. Mountain Vista (1-1)
The Golden Eagles had a bye over the weekend and will host Montrose on September 18.
6. Ralston Valley (1-1)
In a rematch of last year’s State Championship Game, the Mustangs took one on the chin with a rough 38-7 loss to Cherry Creek. Quarterback Logan Gabler was an efficient 11-of-16 for 119 yards and a touchdown, and talented junior receiver Phoenix Tomsick caught six passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. The Mustangs trailed 21-0 at the half and struggled to stop the Bruins ground game that rushed for 213 yards on the night. Ralston Valley will play on the road against a tough Arapahoe team on Thursday.
7. Palmer Ridge (3-0)
The Bears took down Mountain Ridge 35-12. Junior running back Micah Nocita went off, rushing for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Schrock added 68 yards and a touchdown on the ground, and quarterback Knox Tinlin threw for 206 yards and a touchdown in a really well-balanced offensive effort. The Bears have a bye this weekend and will then play at Air Academy on September 18.
8. Montrose (2-0)
The Red Hawks knocked off Palisade 21-12 to move to 2-0 on the season. Montrose had to rally after falling behind 12-0 in the 1st half. Chazz Miller scored from 26 yards out late in the half to get the Red Hawks on the board and they were able to dominate the 2nd half with a strong ground game. Running back Lincoln Jones rushed for 152 yards and a touchdown, and the defense pitched a shutout. The Red Hawks will play at Mountain Vista on Friday.
9. Arapahoe Warriors (1-1)
The Warriors blew out Heritage 58-14. Theo Lee continued his hot start to the season, completing 26-of-34 passes for 332 yards and seven touchdowns, and added another score on the ground. The seven passing touchdowns were a school record and Lee is quickly showing he’ll be among the most heavily recruited quarterbacks in the Midlands region in the ’28 class. Junior receiver Ryland Reinert had a big game as well, catching seven passes for 83 yards and four touchdowns. The Warriors will host state No. 6-ranked Ralston Valley on Thursday.
10. Legend (1-1)
The Titans took down Chaparral 44-14 to earn their first win of the season. Legend jumped on Chaparral early, leading 23-0 after the 1st quarter and 44-0 at the half. The game was delayed an hour due to a lightning delay, and the Wolverines were never able to get it going in this one. The road will get much harder for Legend next week when they take on state No. 1 ranked Cherry Creek.
