‘Colorado Should Be 4-0’ — 2-Time Super Bowl Champ Refuses To Blame Deion Sanders As Baylor Loss Rings Alarm Bells

Deion Sanders’ Colorado opened Big 12 play with a disappointing 23-13 loss to Baylor. With the loss to the Bears, the Buffaloes have now fallen to 2-2 in the 2026 season.
However, two-time Super Bowl champion Asante Samuel is one of the few staying positive about Coach Prime and Colorado’s outlook.
Why Asante Samuel Remains Optimistic About Deion Sanders’ Colorado
Colorado’s offense struggled to find any rhythm for much of Saturday’s game, with many pointing to Lewis as a major reason behind the unit’s difficulties. The quarterback finished 11-of-16 for only 75 yards, failed to throw a touchdown, and took three costly sacks.
With Colorado trailing 10-3 at halftime, Coach Prime decided to make a change under center, handing quarterback duties to Isaac Wilson. Sanders explained after the game that he made the switch in an attempt to spark the Buffaloes’ offense.
Samuel is among those who agreed with Sanders’ decision, suggesting that Lewis was a “big part of the problem” during Colorado’s offensive struggles. However, Samuel continues to see plenty of potential in the Buffaloes.
“There are plenty of positive signs from Colorado to look forward to after this game,” Samuel said on his “Say What Needs To Be Said” podcast.
“Colorado should have won this game, and a lot of people may not agree with me, but I feel like Colorado’s last game as well; Northwestern shouldn’t have beaten Colorado. Colorado should be 4-0.
“But I will say one of the positives of Colorado: they played a lot better in the second half against Baylor. The Colorado football team and Coach Prime have started the first three games of the season playing pretty good football. Started the game playing pretty good football. How it ended, that’s a different story because the game last week against Northwestern got out of control.”

There are reasons behind Samuel’s optimism. Colorado remained in the game deep into the fourth quarter, tying Baylor 13-13 before the Bears scored the final 10 points.
The Buffaloes’ defense stepped up at several key moments to keep the game competitive, while cornerback Boo Carter once again showed his mettle. Heading into this weekend, the Buffaloes’ defense had a PFN Impact Grade of 76.0, which ranked #68 in the country.
Wide receiver Joseph Williams also continued to give opposing defenses plenty to worry about, even as Colorado struggled to produce points on offense consistently.
Those factors are why Samuel still believes the Buffaloes have the pieces to put together a successful season.

“I’m gonna tell you again, Coach Prime really does have a pretty good team,” Samuel said. “Everything needs to line up, along with some coaching errors, little discipline, little maturity, and things will work.”
However, Colorado has little time to dwell on Saturday’s performance. The Buffaloes will now face a difficult stretch, with upcoming games against Texas Tech and Utah presenting immediate challenges for Sanders and his team.
