Colorado State’s Jim Mora explains DC Tyson Summers’ mid-game firing

Colorado State Rams coach Jim Mora permanently dismissed defensive coordinator Tyson Summers after removing him as the team’s play-caller during Saturday’s 56-26 loss to Oregon State.

Summers was removed during the first half after Oregon State built an early advantage. He then left the field and did not return to the sideline.

Speaking to the media, Mora explained the unusual situation after the game.

“Tyson was relieved of his play-calling duties,” Mora said. “He left the field and he’s no longer with this football program.”

When asked whether the decision was permanent, Mora gave a direct answer.

“That is permanent,” he said.

The decision came as Colorado State struggled defensively against Oregon State quarterback Braden Atkinson. The Beavers scored 42 of their final 56 points after Colorado State briefly tied the game at 14.

Co-defensive coordinator Kenny McClendon assumed the defensive play-calling duties after Summers’ removal.

“He was put in a very difficult situation and he responded well and the players responded well,” Mora said.

McClendon’s first call produced an immediate result. Oregon State was hit for a sack and fumble, giving Colorado State a brief defensive highlight during the eventual blowout.

Mora said McClendon will remain the primary defensive play-caller moving forward. The coach also praised his ability to handle an unexpected responsibility.

“He’s a good football coach,” Mora said. “So we’re going to get better. We’re going to get a lot better.”

The defensive struggles had already become a major concern for Colorado State. The Rams entered Saturday having allowed 100 points across their previous two games. They have now surrendered 193 points through five games, an average of 38.6 points per game.

Summers joined Colorado State in 2025 and previously served as interim head coach before Mora took over the program.

Mora also clarified that he did not instruct Summers to leave the field.

“I just relieved him of his duties as a play caller,” Mora said. “He made the decision on his own to leave the field.”

Colorado State fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in Pac-12 play. The Rams next face San Jose State on Oct. 12.
