The month of June has been a grind for Ohio State’s coaching staff. Position camps, recruiting visits, and still prioritizing their current roster, the Buckeyes have had zero time off… and that will soon change.
Ryan Day and company set to be on vacation in the coming days for a well deserved break, that doesn’t mean the headlines and happenings will slow down. If anything, the next week or two could provide some major news further proving how important this month has been for the future of the program.
Fruits of the labor showing all the way to the 2029 class this week thanks to Austin Miller’s commitment, Ohio State’s coaches and support staff did everything they could to put their recruiting classes in the best possible position to see success.
Now it’s time to start seeing if those decisions will be in the favor.
Who’s next?
Commitment season looming, Ohio State has several top targets that have either set their decision date or at least have some buzz around their respective recruitment that an announcement could come soon. Important to note that anything in recruiting can change in the blink of an eye, it’s possible for some surprises along the way too.
Looking ahead to who could be next, Marcus Fakatou is a major target that would be a huge get for Larry Johnson and Ohio State. The No. 24 player nationally and second best defensive lineman in the 2027 class per the 247Sports Composite, Fakatou being paired with DJ Jacobs in the same class would be nothing short of incredible, and certainly have them slotted as one of the top hauls when all is said and done.
Cancelling official visits to USC and Oregon, Fakatou has a final three of Georgia, Ohio State, and Texas, but the momentum the Buckeyes have cannot be overlooked. Greg Biggins of Rivals has led the way in sharing a decision could be coming in Late June or early July, and it’s obviously getting close to crunch time.
Noting the genuine approach the Ohio State program has to recruiting rather than other programs who are lining their fields with fancy cars during official visits, Fakatou looks to be more interested in what is real and not hype. If that stays the case, the Buckeyes are the pick more than likely.
Quick Hits
Anytime you have a five-star player committed an an NIL driven recruiting world it can be somewhat nerve-racking as you work and hope to keep that commitment from being flipped. Other top programs always circling and pitching why a player should change his mind, the Buckeyes have seen their fair share of that the last few seasons.
Big time players have flipped late in the game to programs like Miami, and Ohio State isn’t a stranger to that in the 2027 class either — mainly with DJ Jacobs. The coveted edge-rusher is the top player in the country per 247Sports, and has been locked in with the Buckeyes since December.
Those other programs not going anywhere, Jacobs has been consistent with his words and actions, and that’s all you can ask for from Ohio State’s side of things. Once again representing his future team on Wednesday, Ryan Day and his staff continue to ease the tension that he could end up elsewhere.
Anything is possible, but right now the relationship between the two parties is strong and should stay that way.
