Texas A&M’s intense pursuit of 2025 five-star cornerback John Meredith took a turn this spring after the Texas Longhorns received a prediction to land the elite prospect during the latter parts of the spring season, placing more pressure on the Aggies before he headed to College Station for his official visit earlier this month.
In today’s chaotic college football landscape, dominated by NIL opportunities and collectives that provide nearly every Power Four program the funds to land top-ranked prospects, while Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech have dominated the Lone Star State, competing for nearly every blue-chip prospect, the Aggies have successfully branched out to Georgia and Florida.
While Meredith’s official visit with the Aggies went off without a hitch, his OV with the Longhorns reportedly sealed the deal for coach Steve Sarkisian to land his second five-star commit, and after making his announcement on the Pat McAfee show last week, Meredith strictly kept things in the realm of football when discussing his choice to commit to Texas, but opened up during his recent interview with Rivals’ Sam Speigelman.
Off the bat, Meredith stated that, while he “loves A&M,” committing to Texas became a business decision, while his relationship with Sarkisian’s cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey, who has a development plan in place for the blue-chip defender, who is now the highest rated cornerback commit in program history.
“I love A&M to death,” he added. “It’s nothing personal. It’s business.”
Third-year head coach Mike Elko’s development background in the secondary is nearly unmatched, while new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill is also known as one of the top secondary coaches, and combined with new cornerbacks coach Bryant Gross-Armiento, John Meredith has been in very good hands.
Still, no one can blame Meredith for making the best decision for his future, and while it’s hard to deny that money played a significant role in his final decision based on his stating this was “business,” Elko and his staff are now wholly focused on landing fellow five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, who will announce his commitment on Wednesday, July 1.
“It was hard,” Meredith stated. “I really wanted to go to A&M. I always felt the love at Texas. I was comfortable at A&M, but in reality, you can’t settle where you’re comfortable.”
If the Aggies land Dobson next week, combined with five-star cornerback Raylaun Henry, Texas A&M’s future cornerback rotation is all but complete.
