Houston's quarterback Conner Weigman has received his third national award watch list this month.
On August 20, Weigman and 29 other quarterbacks were named to the Davey O'Brien Award watch list, an award that honors the nation's best quarterback.
Weigman is now in the conversation with some of the best quarterbacks across the nation, so here is the case for the Cougars' quarterback.
The Numbers
In 2025, Weigman accounted for 36 total touchdowns, which led the Big 12 and was the seventh-most in the nation. He also had 3,405 offensive yards, the 12th most by a Cougar quarterback since 1996 and his 700 rushing yards were the second most by a Houston quarterback since 1996, per Houston Athletics.
He is one of four FBS quarterbacks to have both 25 or more passing touchdowns and 10 or more rushing touchdowns in 2025. He was also a three-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week last season and was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Maxwell Award watch lists.
Supporting Cast
Wide receiver Amare Thomas is an elite No. 1 option for the quarterback and is considered one of the best wide receivers in the conference. Additionally, Oregon State transfer receiver Trent Walker is Weigman's best option to move the chains and get closer to the end zone on third down.
Running back Makhi Hughes takes carries off the quarterback and limits how often Weigman runs, which could reduce his injury risk. Offensive linemen Shadre Hurst and Anthony Boswell have been named to national watch lists and can prove to be dominant in the trenches.
Finally, head coach Willie Fritz and offensive coordinator Slade Nagle put Weigman through their system in 2025 and can spend more time developing his game in the upcoming season.
What are Weigman's Chances?
When compared to other quarterbacks who have been selected to the Davey O'Brien Award watch list, Weigman looks to be around the middle of the pack. Quarterbacks like Arch Manning, Dante Moore, Marcel Reed and Trinidad Chambliss all had over 3,000 passing yards, while Weigman finished with 2,705. Additionally, they have better chances because of the powerhouses they play for like Texas, Oregon, Texas A&M and Ole Miss.
Even if Weigman doesn't win the award, he can prove that he belongs among the best quarterbacks in the nation. September 5 against Oregon State is his first chance to make his case.
