As Penn State prepares for the first season under new head coach Matt Campbell, they are also in the thick of recruiting for the next two cycles. While the 2027 class has added some interesting pieces, it is the 2028 class that could define Matt Campbell's long term success. Having already signed 4-star QB James Armstrong, their attention could turn to another four star prospect in Deonte Flemings Jr. While Flemings is still committed to the Nittany Lions at the moment, things could change quickly, as he has several key visits upcoming this season.

Amongst those in pursuit of his flipping his commitment are Penn State's Big Ten and recruiting rivals in Nebraska. Matt Rhule, a former Nittany Lion himself, has already caused Penn State problems this offseason with his aggressive recruiting style. His most important move was prying four star recruit Khalil Taylor away from Penn State's grasp. Should he somehow flip Flemings, he could continue to be a thorn in Campbell's side that could heavily impact the future of Penn State football.

Another recruiting foe, Notre Dame, is also in the hunt. This time, it could be even more heartbreak. Marcus Freeman and Co. might have caused the most damage in Penn State's recruiting process, having pried several top Pennsylvania recruits from Campbell's grasp, including top five O-linemen Abraham Sesay and James Halter. The less said about the 2026 cycle the better as well.

For Flemings, anything is possible. He recently told Rivals, "At the end of the day, I still want to be a kid and enjoy my recruitment and make the best decision for me and my family.” This could mean several things. But this could most importantly be a warning to Penn State that no one's signature is safe when they commit to the quad. Don't expect Flemings to be any different.
