Covenant Christian football dominates Centerville to clinch share of District title

Not only was Friday’s game homecoming for Covenant Christian football, the Lions had a chance to clinch at least a share of the District 7-1A title with a win. That’s exactly what CCA did, defeating the Centerville Bulldogs 46-0.

There were few moments Friday where the outcome seemed to be in question. The Lions (7-2, 3-0 District 7-1A) took a 14-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but by halftime, had extended it to nearly 40 after a 25-point second quarter.

Early in the third, it looked like CHS had a chance to at least get on the scoreboard, albeit with the game already all but decided. But the Bulldogs fumbled out of the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, keeping the shutout intact.

On the ensuing possession, CCA scored its final touchdown of the game, triggering the running clock rule.

Big plays

If there were any hopes of a Bulldogs (2-7, 1-3) comeback, they were eliminated in the second quarter.

After scoring a touchdown to go up 20-0, the Lions caught CHS off guard with a surprise onside kick. With Centerville playing deep, the ball was able to travel the required 10 yards and CCA pounced on it to steal a possession.

On the next offensive drive, running back Braydon Percle broke free from 43 yards out to extend the lead to 27-0.

Big players

Percle had a fine game, rushing for 101 yards and two scores. But the offensive leader was unquestionably quarterback Owen Trosclair, who was responsible for four touchdowns, two rushing and two passing.

Defensively, defensive back Patrick Williams also showed out. He forced two turnovers, forcing and recovering a fumble as well as intercepting a pass.

They said it

“We prepared all week for this moment. We knew this was our homecoming game,” Covenant Christian coach Jesse Turner said. “At the end of the day, we knew what it would take to have this type of success. Monday through Thursday, the guys put on their hard hats.”

What’s next

CCA will host Central Catholic next Friday to close the regular season.
