After opening the season 2-0, optimism was building around Deion Sanders and Colorado heading into Saturday’s game against Northwestern. Instead, the Buffaloes were handed an embarrassing 41-7 thumping, prompting fans to begin discussing potential candidates to replace Coach Prime in Boulder.

Colorado Fans Zero In on Potential Deion Sanders Replacement

Colorado endured an embarrassing Saturday, committing mistake after mistake in the first half against Northwestern. The Buffaloes’ early turnovers gave the Wildcats plenty of opportunities, and Northwestern capitalized to build an early advantage before cruising to a win that handed the Buffaloes their first loss of the season.

The disappointing performance immediately sparked questions about the future of the Sanders era in Boulder.

Some began discussing potential alternatives, with Denver Sports 104.3 analyst Jake Shapiro specifically mentioning New Mexico head coach Jason Eck as a possible candidate.

Several others also mentioned Eck as a potential replacement for Sanders.

“Jason Eck. Jason Eck. Jason Eck,” college football analyst Colby Dant wrote.

Eck has built considerable momentum at New Mexico since taking over the program. After leading the Lobos to nine wins last season, he helped the program reach a bowl game for the first time since 2016. His work in Albuquerque has changed perceptions of New Mexico and attracted attention beyond the Mountain West.

New Mexico indeed lost to Oklahoma 14-6 on Saturday, but the program remained within striking distance for much of the game.

Oklahoma scored its first touchdown in the second quarter before New Mexico responded with two field goals. The Sooners added another touchdown in the third quarter and relied on their defense down the stretch to secure the victory.

Despite the loss, Eck’s ability to keep New Mexico competitive against Oklahoma also fueled the conversation among Colorado supporters.

“Eck might be the best G6 coach out there. They were in the OU game tonight until the last two minutes, and he’s done a whale of a job since he came to Albuquerque. CU would be lucky to get him, but there will be bigger opportunities out there,” one wrote.

“Jason Eck, please come on down,” a fan said. “Jason Eck would be great at CU,” another remarked.

For now, there has been no indication that Colorado is mulling a change. There are plenty of factors that will come into play when it comes to such a monumental decision. That said, Coach Prime and his staff do not have as long a leash as they did a few years ago, especially after how last season ended.

Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter graduated to the NFL last year, and the Buffaloes’ subsequent iteration did not impress one bit, finishing 3-9 and raising concerns about the direction of the program under Sanders.

The Buffaloes will now look to bounce back as they prepare for their Week 4 game against Baylor. The Bears will enter that meeting at 2-1 after defeating Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
