David Braun Signs Contract Extension With Northwestern Through 2031

Northwestern is making a long-term commitment to David Braun.
The Wildcats and Braun have agreed to a new contract that will keep him at Northwestern through the 2031 season, extending his previous agreement by three years and delivering a significant salary increase.

The deal comes as Braun enters his fourth season as Northwestern’s head coach and gives the program a clear indication that it believes in the direction he has taken the Wildcats since taking over during a turbulent 2023 season.
Braun originally earned the full-time job after serving as Northwestern’s interim head coach in 2023. He immediately helped stabilize the program, leading the Wildcats to an 8-5 record and a Las Vegas Bowl victory in his first season. He was named the consensus Big Ten Coach of the Year after guiding Northwestern to seven regular-season wins and five conference victories.
Now, less than three years later, Braun has turned that opportunity into a long-term position in Evanston.
Braun is 20-19 in four seasons at Northwestern, including a 1-0 start to the 2026 season. His 20 wins through his first four seasons have put him among the most successful coaches in program history at this stage of a tenure, while his 11 Big Ten victories through his first three seasons were already tied for the most by a Northwestern head coach in program history.
His postseason record has also helped strengthen the case for the extension. Braun has led Northwestern to two bowl victories in his first three seasons, including a 34-7 win over Central Michigan in the 2025 GameAbove Sports Bowl. That victory made Braun the first coach in Northwestern history to earn two bowl bids in his first three seasons and gave him a 2-0 record in bowl games.
The turnaround is particularly notable when looking at where the program was before Braun arrived. Northwestern went 1-11 in 2022 before Braun took over the following season. The Wildcats improved to 8-5 in his first year, went 4-8 in 2024 and responded with a 7-6 record and bowl victory in 2025.
Now, Northwestern is showing that it views Braun as a coach who can continue building on that foundation.
The timing of the extension also fits into a larger commitment to Northwestern football. The program is preparing to open the new Ryan Field on Oct. 2 against Penn State, marking the first game at the $850 million stadium and another major milestone for the program. Northwestern has described the project as part of a broader investment in the future of its athletic department and football program.
That investment is now paired with a long-term commitment at the most important position in the program: head coach.
Braun has also continued to build his staff and roster around the direction he wants Northwestern football to take. The Wildcats added offensive coordinator Chip Kelly in the offseason, a move Braun previously described as a “program-defining change” and a reflection of Northwestern’s long-term commitment to pursuing championships.
On the field, Northwestern opened the 2026 season with a 34-18 victory over South Dakota State, giving Braun a winning start to his fourth season. The Wildcats now enter their Week 3 matchup with Colorado at 1-0, with the game serving as another opportunity for Braun and his team to build momentum before Big Ten play begins.
The new contract does not guarantee what comes next for Northwestern, but it does make the university’s intentions clear. Northwestern believes Braun has earned the opportunity to continue leading the program and has given him a long-term runway to build on the progress of his first four seasons.
For Braun, the extension represents more than additional years on a contract. It is a tangible sign of trust from Northwestern as the program enters a new era, both on the field and off it.
With a new stadium opening, a new-look offense led by Kelly and a team that already has one win on the board in 2026, Braun now has the stability to continue building the program he began reshaping in 2023.
And Northwestern is betting that the direction it has taken under Braun is only the beginning.
