The LSU football program is currently gearing up for the upcoming 2026 college football season, which is slated to begin in just over a month. The Tigers are now led by new head coach Lane Kiffin, who joined the program after departing from Ole Miss in controversial fashion toward the end of last season.

Recently, ESPN college football insider Heather Dinich reported on one game that could make a big difference in the college football playoff committee’s eyes: their season-opening game against Clemson.

“No, the hype isn’t as high as it was a year ago when these teams met, but Clemson should be one of the most improved teams in the country,” noted Dinich. “…coach Dabo Swinny made some significant personnel changes — roster and staff — that should boost the Tigers back to respectability. That would mean a measurable boost to LSU’s résumé, especially if Clemson finishes in the CFP top 25.”

Last year, LSU squeaked by Clemson on the road early in the season, but it quickly became apparent that the win was fool’s gold, as Clemson stumbled mightily from there. Meanwhile, LSU also quickly tapered off as the season wore on, ultimately leading to Brian Kelly’s firing and the hire of Kiffin shortly after the regular season ended.

The Tigers have been largely stuck in limbo since winning the 2019 national title in dominant fashion, and Kiffin is hoping to bring the program back to prominence, having already secured some big boosts in the transfer portal and other mediums during this offseason.

LSU will have a chance to make Dinich’s prediction come true when they take on Clemson at home on September 5 at 7:30 pm ET.
