Texas A&M's quarterback situation entering the 2026 season is set after veteran Marcel Reed returned for his third, and possibly his final season, after throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last fall. Behind him, sophomore Brady Hart and freshman Helaman Casuga fill out a young but talented room that looks deeper compared to last season.
Compared to the rest of the country, the Aggie QB room isn't highly regarded outside of Marcel Reed. Entering his second full starting season, the expectations couldn't be higher for the redshirt junior, who will be working with new QB coach Joey Lynch this summer to fix his remaining issues, ranging from accuracy, ball placement, and better decision-making instead of forcing 50/50 balls.
However, Reed will have more opportunities to test out his arm strength and open up the passing game with 6'4" Alabama transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton, now a part of the rotation that is led by junior speedster Mario Craver, who is slated to lead the Aggies in receiving yards this fall.
Among the top-ranked signal callers in the country, including Arch Manning (Texas), Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss), Darian Mensah (Miami), CJ Carr (Notre Dame), and Julian Sayin (Ohio State), ESPN released its "QB situations for all 138 FBS teams, and after the first two tiers, including every player listed and three other notable quarterbacks, Marcel Reed is in the third tier with five other QBs.
Cleverly named the "Sean Clifford Zone" after the former Penn State quarterback, Reed, alongside Gunner Stockton (Georgia), Josh Hoover (Indiana), John Mateer (Oklahoma), Rocco Becht (Penn State), and Devon Dampier (Utah), are all considered "high variance" quarterbacks who have struggled in big games, failing to step up when asked in "gotta have it" situations.
ESPN's David Hale notes that Stockton, Mateer, and Reed are a combined 0-4 in the College Football Playoff, including six turnovers, which were a major issue for Marcel Reed in losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the CFP.
For the Aggies to have any shot at making it back to the postseason, winning road games against LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Alabama, and Oklahoma will require elite play from Reed, and while first-year OC Holmon Wiggins wants to establish a balanced running game, he'll need to rely on his starting QB's dual-threat skillset to get the job done late in the year.
