Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire had a curious response to reporters on Monday, throwing shade at USC fans for not showing up to last weekend's opener. He reiterated his respect for Lincoln Riley, but the diss spoke louder than his complement.

The 14th-ranked Trojans defeated San Jose State 42-26 on Saturday afternoon in front of a mostly-empty Los Angeles Memorial Stadium. There was very little interest in the Week 0 affair with no conference implications. Nevertheless, the turnout was embarrassing as Riley and his team ran out of the tunnel and onto the field.

McGuire replied by explaining everything is bigger in Texas. At least it will be when Texas Tech hosts Abilene Christian on Saturday.

“Not to take any shots, because I have a lot of respect for USC and Lincoln Riley, but it’s really awesome to be playing in Lubbock, Texas, knowing we’re going to be playing in front of 60,000 (fans),” McGuire said Monday. “It’s going to be warm. It’s going to be every bit as warm as it was Saturday."

McGuire went on about the Texas Tech supporters and how they're not selective about when they show up for games.

“The great thing is we got some really tough people in West Texas that love their football, and they’re going to show up, no matter what the weather’s like. There’s not going to be any excuse of why they’re not going to be here for us."

USC still being at the Coliseum has put strain on Trojans' fans. The iconic venue has been home to a one-time blue blood college football program for decades. However, SoFi is a state-of-the-art stadium and could be more attractive to host games. UCLA was trying to move away from the Rose Bowl in favor of SoFi, and aren't ready to do so just yet.

"We understand the factors that impacted Saturday’s attendance," USC officials told USA TODAY Sports. "We have high expectations and a premier home schedule this season, and we know the competitive advantage an electric Coliseum atmosphere can provide our program. We thank our fans who showed up on Saturday and look forward to seeing increased attendance the rest of the season."

The Trojans will have another shot at filling up the Coliseum this weekend against Fresno State.
