Five-Star CB Donte Wright Explains Decision to Flip to Miami Amid NIL Speculation

The Miami Hurricanes continue to take advantage of the opportunities that NIL presents. During the 2026 recruiting cycle, Mario Cristobal and his staff landed a commitment from five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell.
According to Rivals’ Pete Nakos, the pass protector was offered a first-year deal “around the $2 million mark.” With eyes now on the 2027 recruiting class, Miami made a huge splash on Saturday, flipping cornerback Donte Wright from the Georgia Bulldogs.
While how much he was offered is not known, Nakos previously reported that a Big Ten general manager said the top of the defensive back market is nearing the $1.2 million range.
However, after flipping to the Hurricanes, Wright spoke to Rivals’ Adam Gorney and clarified that his NIL earnings aren’t the sole reason for his decision.
“There are a lot of people who are going to say I took the bag or whatever,” Wright said. “If I’m being real with you, I could’ve gone somewhere else and taken a way crazier bag and surprised everyone. That wasn’t me, that wasn’t my goal. My goal was to play football at a high level, somewhere I’m going to be comfortable and the main thing here was life after ball.”
No matter the reasoning, though, Wright is a major addition for Miami. At 6-foot-0.5 and 175 pounds, he is a five-star recruit, the No. 2 cornerback and the No. 8 player in the nation, per Rivals Industry Rankings.
Last season for Long Beach Poly High School, he appeared in seven games, recording 25 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and seven pass deflections. He also had five kick returns for 153 yards.
With an On3 NIL valuation of $457,000, there’s no doubt Miami had to spend big to bring him in. However, after being just the second five-star commitment in the 2027 cycle alongside wide receiver Nick Lennear, it may be a calculated investment for the Hurricanes.
