Five-star OT Ismael Camara commits to Texas

The Texas Longhorns received some huge recruiting news on the Fourth of July — literally and figuratively — with the pledge of Gilmer offensive tackle Ismael Camara.

Camara chose Texas over close to forty other offers and had recently narrowed his list to 10 finalists — Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, LSU, Ohio State, Oregon, SMU, Tennessee, and Texas A&M. Other offers included Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, South Carolina, TCU, and Texas Tech, among others.

The high-profile recruitment of Camara took a significant turn at the start of the summer official visit season when the 6’6, 340-pounder announced the cancelation of his planned visits, although he did make a surprise trip to Austin for an unofficial visit in June.

A strong indicator of Camara’s interest, the trip increased the buzz around the Gilmer product and the Longhorns as speculation began to circulate about the upcoming decision that came on Saturday.

After landing in East Texas from France, Camara played his first varsity season of football last fall and became one of the most coveted offensive linemen in the country thanks to his prototypical size, athleticism, and strength that has only improved this offseason as Camara prepares to play even more diverse roles for Gilmer as a senior than he did in 2025 when he played left tackle, along the defensive line, and on special teams.

The lack of on-field experience may slow Camara’s developmental timeline after he arrives on the Forty Acres, but the flashes of his feet and movement ability despite his incredible size are absolutely elite and set a remarkably high size when combined with his flexibility and nastiness as a blocker.

A consensus five-star prospect, Camara is ranked as the No. 20 player overall and the No. 3 offensive tackle, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Now the 22nd pledge in the 2027 recruiting class, Camara is the fifth offensive lineman in an impressive haul for position coach Kyle Flood. The centerpiece of the class for the Horns, Camara projects as the final take at the position for Texas, which now ranks No. 4 nationally in the team rankings, narrowly behind Notre Dame.
