The UCLA Bruins’ football program did not get the Independence Day gift they had wanted, with five-star recruit Xavier Sabb committing to join a Big Ten Conference rival, the Oregon Ducks.
Sabb had UCLA as one of the four finalists for his commitment, along with Oregon, Tennessee and LSU, but Sabb decided to join Oregon due to their chances to win a national title.
“Best choice, best chance I can get to winning a national championship.” Sabb said after his commitment.

It’s hard for UCLA to disagree with Sabb’s assessment. Oregon has become a College Football Playoff fixture, even if the Ducks are still seeking their first championship. UCLA has yet to make a CFP appearance, and while the team appears headed in the right direction, Oregon’s farther along in the process.
Sabb is Rivals’ No. 32 recruit in the nation, listing the Glassboro, New Jersey product as a wide receiver, rather than an athlete, which is how 247 Sports has Sabb. Signs are pointing to Sabb sticking on the offensive side of the ball, rather than using his skillset as a defensive back.
Oregon is putting together a very strong 2027 recruiting class. The Ducks’ commits rank as the No. 2 in the nation according to 247 Sports, with Sabb being the third five-star recruit for the Ducks.
UCLA’s 2027 recruiting class peaked earlier this year but it’s still ranked as the No. 18 in the country, with the group being led by five-star cornerback JuJu Johnson.
