Florida Gators football legend Tim Tebow strongly rejected Chase Daniel’s comparison between the Gators and Vanderbilt ahead of Saturday night’s SEC opener against Auburn.

The exchange came during SEC Nation at Auburn, where Florida and the Tigers entered the matchup 2-0 under first-year head coaches Jon Sumrall and Alex Golesh. Daniel pointed to Vanderbilt’s recent rise while discussing the direction of the Gators’ program.

The SEC Network took to X, formerly Twitter, sharing Daniel’s comparison and Tebow’s immediate reaction from the set. The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner took exception to the suggestion that Florida could follow a similar path to the Commodores.

“I do think that Florida could be the next Vandy.”

Tebow immediately pushed back on his fellow former quarterback’s comparison:

“You can’t say that. That is the most derogatory thing I’ve ever heard in my life.”

Vanderbilt provides recent evidence for Daniel’s comparison. The Commodores went 10-3 in 2025, setting a program record for victories while finishing 6-2 in SEC play and No. 15 in the final AP poll. Vanderbilt also opened the 2026 season 2-0.

The Gators hold a much different historical profile, including three national championships and three Heisman Trophy winners. Tebow won one of those awards in 2007, when Daniel finished fourth in the voting while playing for the Missouri Tigers.

The Gators are beginning a new era under Sumrall after the Billy Napier tenure. Quarterback Aaron Philo has completed 76.2% of his passes for 517 yards and five touchdowns through Florida’s first two games.

Saturday provides Florida with their first real SEC test under the new regime, with the 2-0 Gators visiting the undefeated Auburn Tigers tonight at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
