Florida HC Jon Sumrall Worried 1 Quarterback Will Lose Games This Season

The Florida Gators are entering training camp with uncertainty at the quarterback position.

That's hardly the only area on the roster with questions for first-year head coach Jon Sumrall. The offensive line and front seven on defense need to show improvement this summer. 

However, Florida's chances to be a College Football Playoff dark horse or just good enough to make a bowl game will depend on the play of whoever wins the quarterback battle between Tramell Jones Jr. and Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo.

During the SEC Media Days this week in Tampa, Florida, Sumrall told reporters that Philo and Jones showed this spring that they were capable of starting this season, though he suggested Jones needs to show more consistency before getting the opportunity to lead the offense. 

While Jones made some of the best plays during spring practice, the freshman made some mistakes that would have been a game-killer for Florida. Philo, who came to Florida from GT with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, has a better grasp of the offense.

"Philo's comfort level or confidence within what we're doing schematically is more advanced early on, and probably still is for that matter," Sumrall said, via ESPN.

"Tramell did some really good things, though, in the spring at times. His highs were like, 'Whoa.' The problem, at times, was the lows. You're like, 'Hey, we can't do that. That'll lose the game.'"

The inverse is true too. The highs can win games, and scared money don't make money.

Based on Sumrall's comments, it appears Florida will have to decide if they want to go with a more cautious and game-manager approach with Philo or go more aggressively with a gunslinger mentality from Jones.

Of course, there is the possibility that Philo and Jones will continue the battle into the regular season. Sumrall hinted that both quarterbacks could play this fall. 

"I could see a scenario, for a lot of different reasons, where we're going to need both of them to perform like a starter," Sumrall said.

At Tulane last season, Sumrall started Jake Retzlaff (who became the starter after Darian Mensah transferred to Duke), but subbed in Brendan Sullivan at times.

Sumrall and the Green Wave made the CFP last season with that dynamic, though Florida's schedule will be much harder in the SEC.
