Florida football came into this season just looking for some optimism for the future under new head coach Jon Sumrall. Sumrall took over a Gators program that has been in peril over the last few years after leading Tulane to the College Football Playoff last season.
Through three weeks, Florida has a lot more to look forward to than just the future. The Gators are 3-0 and just walked into Jordan Hare Stadium and took down Auburn in their conference opener on the road 44-39. Following that win, Sumrall and company found themselves ranked at No. 21 in the AP poll.
Now, Florida faces its biggest test yet under Sumrall. No. 4 Ole Miss is slated to enter The Swamp on Saturday, with the best quarterback in the nation and Heisman favorite in Trinidad Chambliss and coming off of a big win over LSU.

Sumrall has already been blown away by the fans in Gainesville. He is expecting an even rowdier atmosphere on Saturday when the Rebels come to town, and he even took a dig at Auburn fans in the process.

“Full disclosure, our FAU game blew me away. Our FAU game, the crowd, was livelier than what we played in on Saturday night (against Auburn),” Sumrall said on The Brandon Walker College Football Show. “So, I can only imagine what that’s gonna feel like when you bring a top-five team into this place. Ole Miss is a really good football team. I have a lot of confidence our fanbase is gonna have an impact on the game.”
There’s no question that The Swamp is one of the toughest places to play in college football. That should pose a big challenge for Ole Miss when it shows up on Saturday. But Trinidad Chambliss, Pete Golding and the rest of this Rebels team was battle-tested time and time again last season, and it was again last Saturday against LSU.
It will take a heck of an effort for Florida to pull off the upset on Saturday, but Sumrall is hoping the crowd makes the difference in this battle of SEC unbeatens.
