Florida's Philo among transfer portal QBs who can help shape CFP race

Incoming transfer Aaron Philo was mentioned among the most underrated quarterbacks who hit the portal after last season. Seven signal callers were listed as players who could shape the college football season in 2026.
Acquiring quarterbacks from the portal is arduous work, given the high-value nature of the position and limited roster spots for candidates, and every selection is crucial. Philo is hoping the coaching staff can see his upside as an investment.
Arriving in Gainesville with little fanfare, Philo transferred from Georgia Tech on the heels of Buster Faulkner taking control of Florida's offense as Jon Sumrall's most important staff hire. After backing up Haynes King in Atlanta, the 6-foot-1-inch, 208-pound Georgia native now hopes to take over the reins of Faulkner's offense in Gainesville.
His familiarity with the offensive scheme gives Philo a clear advantage in the quarterback battle that has pressed into the summer after spring practices yielded no certainty under center. CBS Sports described the redshirt sophomore as an "ideal fit" in the structure Faulkner wants to implement at Florida — a system that calls for the quarterback to leverage mobility outside the pocket.
Former four-star in-state prospect Tramell Jones Jr. had the more enticing final scrimmage as the two men split first-team reps. Yet, Jones Jr. didn't do enough to earn the QB1 designation, leaving the door open for Philo as the fall months loom. The latter may end up being a bridge quarterback, but with so much at stake in a season where the Gators need to find stability, he may be the best option to elevate the floor even if he presents a lower ceiling.
If the performances are equal, will Faulkner steer towards the familiar face or the more dynamic athlete in Jones Jr.? It's a decision that could define the Gators season and with it a chapter of this season's SEC story.
