AUBURN — Gus Malzahn, who spent eight seasons at the helm of Auburn football and more than three decades coaching the sport at the high-school and collegiate levels, announced his retirement Monday, Feb. 2.
Malzahn was most recently Florida State's offensive coordinator, spending just one season in Tallahassee after four years as Central Florida's head coach.
"After 35 years, it's time for me to step away from coaching," Malzahn said in a statement. "I am excited to spend more time with my family and focus on the next chapter of my life."
An Arkansas native, Malzahn spent 15 seasons as a high school head coach in the Natural State, and he became one of just two head coaches in the state's history to lead three different schools to a state title appearance. He joined the Arkansas Razorbacks program as offensive coordinator in 2006, and he held similar roles at Tulsa (2007-08) and Auburn (2009-11) before taking his first college head-coaching gig at Arkansas State in 2012.
After one season in Jonesboro, Malzahn returned to the Plains as head coach in 2013, where he lasted through 2020, compiling a 68-35 record along with eight bowl game appearances and five top-25 finishes. Three of Malzahn's seasons with the Tigers saw the program record at least nine wins, and Auburn secured two SEC West titles under his watch.
