It appears that the illustrious career of former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is coming to an end.
Brandon Marcello of CBS Sports reports that the former Auburn head coach and recent offensive coordinator for Florida State will retire from coaching ahead of the 2026 season. Florida State athletics confirmed the report Monday morning.
In a press release from Florida State athletics, Malzahn says that he is looking forward to the next step in his career and to spend more time with family.
"After 35 years, it's time for me to step away from coaching," Malzahn said in the release. "I am excited to spend more time with my family and focus on the next chapter of my life. I want to thank Coach Norvell for giving me the opportunity to coach at such a prestigious program. I will continue to follow Florida State, and I believe great things are ahead for the program under Coach Norvell's leadership and for the offense under Tim Harris."
The Seminoles produced the ACC's top offense under Malzahn's watch in 2025 by posting 472.1 yards per game, and finished third in the ACC in points scored per game (33.0). As mentioned in the statement, Florida State and head coach Mike Norvell will turn to Tim Harris to lead the offense following Malzahn's lone season in Tallahassee, and he will be tasked with ensuring the Seminoles' offense continues to produce at a high level.
Malzahn was a part of Gene Chizik's first staff at Auburn, serving as the Tigers offensive coordinator from 2009-11. In his three-year tenure as Auburn football's offensive coordinator, Auburn averaged 413.3 yards per game and scored 33.6 points per game. Malzahn's offensive leadership played a role in Auburn's BCS National Championship win and in Cam Newton winning the Heisman Trophy, both happening in 2010.
Malzahn returned to Auburn football as its head coach ahead of the 2013 season after spending a year away from the Plains to serve as the head coach at Arkansas State. Malzahn had immediate success as he led the Tigers to an SEC Championship and an appearance in the 2014 BCS National Championship Game, which came down to the wire and ended in a 34-31 win by the Florida State Seminoles. Malzahn went on to coach Auburn football until 2020, when he was fired at the conclusion of the regular season.
Malzahn never experienced a losing season at Auburn, averaging 8.5 wins over his eight-year span. In all, Malzahn won 105 games in 13 seasons as a head coach between stops at Arkansas State, Auburn, and UCF, and was known as an offensive guru thanks to his "hurry up, no huddle" philosophy.
