Former LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly has a new gig, as he heads to television sets for his next stop. Front Office Sports reported on Wednesday that Kelly has accepted a job with CBS to call Mountain West games this season.
While Kelly is certainly expected to get back to coaching at some point, it appears that he will have to wait until he is back on a sideline. He has criticized the Tigers in the past, saying that his firing had made it harder for him to find a job in coaching.
It had been clear for a while that he would not be accepting any on-field jobs this season a long time ago, so it was more of a waiting game to see what he actually does. Even with the sizable payout he received when LSU moved on, he did have to actively be searching for employment to get that payment.
Moving to the booth is an interesting choice for Kelly. Though most only know his coaching persona, he's not necessarily the most popular personality is football. This has become a popular pipeline, regardless of who it is, though. Nick Saban, Chip Kelly, Urban Meyer are some recent collegiate examples but coaches becoming analysts goes back decades. John Madden being probably the most popular example.
Kelly certainly has plenty of knowledge of the game of football that he should be able the share with the audience. Though he has never won a championship, he does have 297 career wins as a head coach, which is the 15th most all time.
