During Jimbo Fisher’s six-year tenure as Texas A&M’s head coach, keeping starting quarterbacks healthy was a major issue, aside from the steady veteran Kellen Mond, whom Fisher inherited from the Kevin Sumlin Regime and who lasted all four of his seasons in College Station without any significant setbacks. Mond, outside of current starting QB Marcel Reed, is the only good example over the past ten seasons.

However, after Haynes King transferred to Georgia Tech, ending his illustrious career, throwing for 7,907 yards and 55 touchdowns and rushing for 2,277 yards and 36 touchdowns in three seasons as the Yellow Jackets’ starter, all his previous injury issues with the Aggies became a distant memory.

After serving as Texas A&M’s starting quarterback during the start of the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Conner Weigman, who traded starts with Marcel Reed due to poor play, saw the writing on the wall after Reed resumed as the starter after leading the Aggies past LSU during his memorable comeback performance, resulting in the former five-star prospect entering the transfer portal.

This was the right decision, ultimately choosing to join the Houston Cougars, returning close to his hometown of Cypress (TX), and hit the ground running during his first starting season in the Big 12, throwing for 2,705 yards, 25 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, and an impressive 700 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Weigman led the Cougars to a 10-3 record and a bowl game win over LSU.

Entering the most important season of his college career, Weigman and the Cougars have high hopes for what they can accomplish this fall, and during his interview with On3’s Pete Nakos, the former Aggie QB isn’t taking any season for granted.

“I feel like maybe I took it for granted the years before. With the injuries, just being able to be out there — I mean, I love the game of football, and just being able to play it day in and day out, it’s a privilege. I didn’t take that for granted at all.”

Finally, staying healthy for a full season, Weigman deserves praise for making a change, no matter how tough it was to leave College Station. While it’s true that Weigman could have returned for the 2025 season and battled for the starting job with Marcel Reed, a fresh start in a new environment likely saved his career.

“There’s going to be adversity in your face, and how you respond to that is how you’re going to be known,” Weigman said. “I could have gone back home [after Texas A&M] and sulked and felt sorry for myself and went on with my life, but I love the game of football. I love playing this game. I love being around my teammates and my coaches.”
