Colorado entered the 2026 season with renewed optimism after starting 2-0, but that momentum quickly disappeared against Northwestern, as the Buffaloes suffered a humiliating 41-7 loss.

With Colorado struggling to build on its strong start, fans have already begun speculating about where Coach Prime could potentially land next.

Fans Fuel Deion Sanders-to-Florida State Talk After Colorado Defeat

Heavy roster turnover contributed to a disappointing 3-9 season for Colorado in 2025. Expectations were raised again heading into this season following several optimistic comments from Sanders during the offseason, but the Buffaloes’ loss to Northwestern once again exposed some of the team’s ongoing problems.

That defeat also prompted Bomani Jones to express some major doubts about Sanders’ long-term outlook at Colorado on the latest episode of “The Right Time with Bomani Jones.”

“The promise of what Deion Sanders could have been is over,” Jones said. “The comparative advantage that you would have because Deion Sanders is your coach no longer matters. Colorado doesn’t have the money. And Deion sounded this alarm early.”

Jones also discussed Sanders’ recent press conference, focusing on the coach’s comments about walking off the field while his players were laughing after suffering a heavy defeat. While Sanders made it clear that he came to Boulder to win, Jones questioned what such comments might communicate to the players and others within the program.

As Jones red-flagged Sanders’ take, fans began speculating if Sanders could already be on the lookout for another job, with a few fans linking him with a potential return to Florida State, where he played in college.

“Florida State time?” one person asked.

“FSU, do the right thing!” another fan implored.

“Prime needs to take his talents back home to FSU,” a third person wrote.

“Deion’s plan was to do well at Colorado and use it as a stepping stone… the problem was Colorado, even with a Heisman Trophy winner and very good college QB, didn’t win that much. Deion was supposed to be gone by now, so to see him and Colorado go through this is weird on both sides,” one fan remarked.

The Florida State speculation comes at a time when the Seminoles are also searching for consistency under Mike Norvell, as FSU went 2-6 in ACC play last season. After opening the 2026 season with a 34-17 win, the Seminoles dropped their next two games and currently sit at 1-2.

As both Florida State and Colorado deal with their respective struggles, speculation about Sanders potentially returning to Tallahassee has continued to circulate among fans.

“He’s cooked. He’s going to FSU next year, and he will choke there as well. Funny, the ESPN analyst love affair for Deion has been quite the last couple of years,” one added.

“Deion is going to quit, is my guess. Florida State sucks; maybe they will think he can revive them. I think NIL messed Deion up. I’m sure Colorado has plenty of NIL, but having players with lots of money changes how much of Deion they would put up with,” a person tweeted.

For now, the focus remains on Sanders and Colorado rather than the growing FSU speculation. The Buffaloes will have an opportunity to respond to their latest defeat when they face Baylor in Week 4.

But Colorado will need to up its game in the weeks to come. The Buffs’ offense received an impact score of 79.4 in PFN’s Team Offense Impact Rankings, while their defense was a touch sturdier, with an impact score of 81.9, thanks largely to a stellar showing in their season opener against Georgia Tech.
