College football’s NIL era has changed how players and coaches approach money, endorsements, and fame. Lane Kiffin’s latest DoorDash commercial is now turning some of that history into a marketing campaign.
The commercial brings together three familiar college football figures whose careers intersected with some of the sport’s most memorable controversies. Their willingness to joke and reference those moments has given fans plenty to discuss.
Fans React to Lane Kiffin, Jameis Winston, and Reggie Bush’s DoorDash Ad
Lane Kiffin, Jameis Winston, and Reggie Bush headline DoorDash’s “Don’t Fan for Free” campaign, which connects their past controversies to the benefits available to athletes in the NIL era.
Winston appears in a grocery store with crab legs, referencing the 2014 civil citation he received after leaving a Tallahassee Publix without paying for seafood while at Florida State. Bush, watching from a balcony, jokes, “Oh, this is what NIL is like? Okay,” while Kiffin delivers the campaign’s pitch for fans to receive rewards, too.
The LSU head coach delivers the central message of the commercial, pointing out how college football has become filled with deals for everyone, from players to coaches and mascots.
“Nowadays, everybody in college football has got a deal. Players, coaches, even mascots…. Why not the fans? It’s about time they got something back. Like free groceries for a year. A sweet ride. Or even a house. Don’t fan for free. Order DoorDash on game days and get rewarded like a football star.”

The ad’s self-aware approach sparked reactions on X, with some divided over which college football figures best fit the campaign.
One fan focused on the personalities involved, writing, “Lane Kiffin and Reggie Bush in an ad. They gathered all the villains.”
The commercial also comes at a time when Kiffin remains a polarizing figure in college football, giving viewers another opening to joke about the SEC’s ongoing legal dispute with LSU and Kiffin. “They about to add this on to the SEC filing, can’t even crack jokes round here no more,” the fan wrote.
Kiffin’s performance itself became another talking point. His serious delivery contrasted with the commercial’s playful premise, leading one viewer to offer a blunt assessment: “Kiffin is such a bad actor.”
While the football audience debated Kiffin, one fan wanted DoorDash to take the concept outside football. “Now we need one with Rick Pitino and John Calipari,” the commenter wrote, suggesting college basketball has plenty of personalities with controversial histories that could fit the same format.
The reactions were not universally negative. One viewer separated Bush and Winston from Kiffin, writing, “I love Jameis and Reggie, but Kiffin sucks”
Another viewer wondered about the irony behind the commercial itself. “I wonder how much they got paid, man,” one fan remarked.
The campaign promotes DoorDash Streaks rewards, including weekly deals, monthly prizes, and a $757,500 cash grand prize that can be applied toward a dream house, along with a refrigerator and a year’s supply of Dr. Pepper.
DoorDash is also offering free Student DashPass through October 12.
