Kirby Smart and Georgia football have won the SEC Championship in three of the last four years, and played for the title in eight of the last nine, including five straight. Still, there are questions about eliminating the SEC Championship game, with Smart giving it some support.

Regardless, Smart thinks winning the SEC is a big deal and is dropping a wild take on winning SEC Championships, according to Chris Low of On3.

“I will never apologize for winning an SEC title. I think it’s the hardest thing to do in sports, to win the SEC title in almost any sport. Our conference is so hard, and when we went to 16 teams, and it made it harder. But we’ve missed the mark in the playoff two years in a row, and I give a lot of credit to those two teams (Ole Miss and Notre Dame),” Smart said. “When you go to the playoff, you’re going to play really good teams. They played better than us in those games.”

While winning the SEC may be difficult, he has made that a standard for the program. Georgia has won six titles in 13 attempts, with four wins and eight appearances under Smart. Still, Georgia has not been able to break through in the playoffs over the last two years, as the Big Ten has won three straight titles.

“I don’t know that there will be teams like those (2021 and 2022) teams ever again, and I’m not talking about just us,” Smart said. “I’m talking about across college football during that run from 2015 to 2022. There were some great, great teams with a lot of great players that were younger. I look across the board now, and you’re much more fragile. You’re much more susceptible to one injury causing a huge drop-off. Things have spread out.”

While things have spread out, with teams like Indiana going 16-0 last season, Texas Tech making its first playoff appearance, and Vanderbilt nearly making the playoffs, Georgia has still put itself in a position to contend.

Georgia expects to be one of the top teams in the nation again in 2026, and open their season on September 5 against Tennessee State.
