Georgia Enters 2026 With Massive Expectations in Athens

Every year, the expectations are enormous in Athens. But heading into the 2026 season, the Georgia Bulldogs have another opportunity to prove they are still one of the premier programs in college football.

Kirby Smart has built Georgia into one of the most consistent teams in the country. The Bulldogs have won at least 11 games in each of the past eight complete seasons and have become a regular fixture in the SEC Championship race. Georgia enters 2026 ranked No. 4 nationally in one preseason Top 25, making the expectations clear once again.

Gunner Stockton Takes the Next Step

One of the biggest storylines entering the season will be quarterback Gunner Stockton.

Stockton returns as Georgia’s starting quarterback after gaining valuable experience last season. With another offseason in the system, the expectation is that he can take another step forward and become the leader of the offense.

For Georgia to reach its ceiling, Stockton will need to be comfortable taking control of games, particularly when the Bulldogs face some of the SEC’s best defenses.

The Bulldogs Have Plenty of Returning Talent

Georgia may have lost significant talent to the NFL, but this program continues to reload.

The Bulldogs return 14 starters, including Stockton, running back Nate Frazier and cornerback Ellis Robinson IV. That experience gives Smart a strong foundation to work with.

Georgia also has one of the most talented and complete rosters in college football. CBS Sports ranked the Bulldogs among the nation’s 10 most complete rosters heading into the season.

The Wide Receiver Room Is a Question Mark

If there is one area that could create some concern, it is the wide receiver position.

Georgia lost six of its top seven pass catchers from last season, leaving a young and relatively inexperienced group entering 2026. Players such as Isaiah Canion and London Humphreys will have opportunities to become bigger parts of the offense.

How quickly those receivers develop could have a major impact on Stockton and the entire offense.

The Schedule Is Brutal

Georgia won’t have much room for error.

The Bulldogs open against Tennessee State before facing Western Kentucky and then traveling to Arkansas. After that, Oklahoma comes to Athens, followed by Vanderbilt and a trip to Alabama.

Georgia then faces Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, Missouri, South Carolina and Georgia Tech to close the regular season.

That Alabama game on October 10 could be one of the biggest games of the entire season.

What Is the Expectation?

For most programs, making the College Football Playoff would qualify as an incredible season.

For Georgia, the bar is higher.

The Bulldogs have established themselves as a national championship contender under Smart, and ESPN has Georgia among the favorites to win the SEC once again.

That means Georgia isn’t simply trying to have a good season.

The Bulldogs are trying to win the SEC.

They’re trying to make a deep playoff run.

And ultimately, they’re trying to win another national championship.

With Kirby Smart leading the way, a talented roster and Gunner Stockton entering another important season, Georgia has everything it needs to compete at the highest level.

The expectations are enormous in Athens. Now it’s time for the Bulldogs to prove they can live up to them.
