Georgia football and coach Kirby Smart have landed a quarterback commitment for the 2027 class who has strong family ties to the SEC.

Colton Nussmeier announced his decision on Friday evening, June 5, on his X account.

He is the younger brother of former LSU quarterback Garret Nussmeier and son of former Florida and Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier.

The 6-foot-3 1/2 , 195-pound Nussmeier is a four-star quarterback out of Ryan High School in Denton, Texas.

He gives the Bulldogs a quarterback in the class after they missed out earlier on four-star Peter Bourque from Massachusetts. He picked Virginia Tech.

Nussmeier is ranked as the nation’s No. 14 overall quarterback by the 247Sports Composite and the No. 167 overall player.

Nussmeier picked Georgia over UCLA and Arkansas, according to Rivals.com

Andrew Ivins, director of scouting for 247Sports, called Nussmeier on the recruiting website a “towering southpaw with a big arm,” who “sees the field with advanced eyes and is quick to diagnose coverages.” He wrote that Nussmeier “owns one of the better interception rates in the class, but must get more consistent in the quick game and learn how to elevate his play in adverse situations.”

Nussmeier played eight games for Flower Mound in Texas in a junior season cut short by a knee injury. He passed for for 1,390 yards, 12 touchdowns and an interception while completing 59.9% of his passes, according to 247Sports.

Nussmeier’s father is now the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints after stops as quarterbacks coach for the Cowboys, Chargers and Eagles.

He was Florida’s offensive coordinator from 2015-17 under Jim McElwain and offensive coordinator at Alabama in 2012-13 when Georgia coach Kirby Smart was defensive coordinator.

Colton’s brother, Garrett, was a seventh-round NFL draft pick by the Chiefs in the April draft. He threw for 7,699 yards with 52 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in his career and was a two-year starter.

Georgia has quarterbacks behind starter Gunner Stockton who will be in the mix to start in 2027.

Nussmeier would join a quarterback room that as of now includes redshirt sophomore Ryan Puglisi, redshirt freshman Ryan Montgomery, redshirt freshman Hezekiah Millender and true freshman Bryson Beaver.
