Georgia report card: Grading the Bulldogs season opening win vs Tennessee State

Georgia football smacked down Tennessee State in a 63-3 blowout Saturday in Sanford Stadium.

A game against an FCS opponent isn't going to tell too much, but the Bulldogs more than took care of business by dominating both sides of the ball.

Offense grade: A+

Georgia scored touchdowns on its first five possessions. The first three were in 2:07 or less in time of possession. The Bulldogs started true freshman guard Zykie Helton and freshman tackle Ekene Okgobo lined up next to him on the right side in the first half. Freshman Craig Dandridge came up with a pair of big first-half catches. Georgia finished with 660 total yards of offense. Nate Frazier had three rushing touchdowns.

Defense grade: A

Georgia forced five straight three-and-outs to start the game. Tennessee State had 0 yards total on its first 15 plays and didn’t get a first down until the second quarter. Georgia got all kind of pressure on third down incompletions on the first possession, Chris Cole knocked down a third down pass on the third and shared a sack with PJ Dean who added another sack. Freshman Khamri Brooks had a third-down pressure. Tennessee State finished with 109 yards.

Special teams grade: B-

Sacovie White-Helton had four punt returns for 59 yards including one for 35 yards and fielded a short kickoff for 18 yards.. Punter Drew Miller booted a 65-yard punt but it went into the end zone for a touchback. He didn’t get down the snap on a field goal try. Georgia got a penalty for two players with jerseys No. 51 (Will Snellings and Malahi Toliver) on a field goal try. Georgia then didn’t get off the subsequent kick. Snellings also had an illegal snap.

Coaching grade: A

Georgia came out focused on both sides of the ball and played efficiently. That's not always easy to do against a team you are expected to beat by a big margin.

Game MVP

Gunner Stockton. The QB was 15 of 16 for 202 yards and three TDs and a 261.7 QB rating.

Overall team grade: A

Georgia hasn’t covered big spreads like the 46 ½ point line under Kirby Smart, but the Bulldogs were focused and played with a purpose for the most part. Georgia did have eight penalties for 91 yards.
