When Lane Kiffin left the University of Mississippi for LSU, you’d expect a measure of unhappiness coming from Oxford. He accepted the job after the team’s regular season ended with a 7-6 record.
Furthermore, Kiffin’s swiping of Ole Miss staff and players, via the transfer portal, did not make him any friends. With that said, for as reviled as he is in Mississippi, across the river, he is adored in Louisiana, despite not winning any games of significance yet.

Subsequently, Kiffin’s return to Mississippi today to face his former program promises to be noteworthy. Social media checked in with their thoughts about how Kiffin was received early as a guest on ESPN’s “College GameDay.”
Throughout his coaching career, loud boos followed Kiffin. Today’s television appearance was no exception. Social media watched him this morning and was quick to respond to what they saw. “This n**** might be the greatest villain we’ve ever seen in college football,” stated one fan.

Yet, one of the more astounding factors is how the coach’s presence unites fans of conference rivals.
“Man he looks nervous 😭” observed another X user. Kiffin did not possess his trademark smirk during the ESPN interview. Instead, he sounded like a coach who seemed very concerned about the game and the emotions surrounding it.
On a more serious note, Kiffin and LSU did ask for tightened security as a section of fans may have crossed the line in their criticism.
“When will the attempt on his life will be. Before, During or after the game?” pondered another X user. Football, in its essence, evokes emotion, almost too much at times.

For every fan that wanders over the line of decency, many more harbor a dislike of Kiffin for a very clear and basic reason.
“Ole Miss fans have every right to hate him. He literally quit on them,” asserted one user. Kiffin isn’t unfamiliar with leaving a program before the season ends. While serving as an assistant coach at Alabama, he took the head coach position at Florida Atlantic.
Initially, he looked to stay at Alabama, helping them prepare for the national championship. However, when the distractions became too much, then-Bama head coach Nick Saban let him go early.
While Kiffin faces criticism from seemingly all sides, some tend to take a more lighthearted approach to the LSU coach and his ESPN appearance.
“Hilarious 😂” chortled another fan. When LSU and Ole Miss line up tonight, all eyes will still be on Kiffin, being cheered on one side and jeered on the other. How the reaction affects Kiffin or the Tigers’ game plan remains to be seen.
