HBCU Football Star William Davis Dead at 22

A standout college football star has tragically died at 22 years old on Monday morning, May 18.

Sam Houston State University confirmed that 22-year-old football star William Davis, a standout defensive back, has died suddenly. The school confirmed the passing in a statement to TMZ Sports.

Davis died suddenly, as head coach Phil Longo confirmed.

"It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Will Davis. Will was a beloved member of our Bearkat football family here at Sam Houston who touched the lives of everyone he knew," he said.

Coach Longo added: "Will was an upbeat, positive, passionate young man who will be sincerely missed. Tanya, the kids and I are praying for Will's family during this difficult time."

The football program confirmed the news, as well.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of William Davis. All of our thoughts and prayers are with the Davis family today," they wrote.

Davis had transferred from Virginia Union University, an HBCU, after three seasons. He was set to begin his time with Sam Houston State this spring.

"My condolences 😔. I pray 🙏🏾 for peace and healing for the family," one shared.

"You were one of my favorites and I was yours your old teacher is really going to miss you saying Love you more, Fave 😚 I will cherish every single memory we made together!!! Mrs. B LOVES Y0U!!! William 💔," another added.

"He was a great person / player. Prayers to his family 🙏," one shared.

An official investigation into his death is underway. May he rest in peace.
