Historic Tomato Bowl voted top high school football stadium in Texas

The Historic Tomato Bowl in downtown Jacksonville was voted as the top high school stadium in Texas by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
The Tomato Bowl beat out the Puncher Dome in Mason in the finals.
Sixty-four stadiums from all across Texas and of various ages and sizes were slotted in a bracket challenge fashion by the leading high school football publication in the state.
All voting was done online.
The Tomato Bowl, home of Jacksonville Fightin’ Indian football and soccer teams as well as Fightin’ Maiden soccer, was built in 1940 as a Works Progress Administration project.
The Tomato Bowl defeated Katy-Legacy Stadium, Henderson-Lion Stadium, Dallas-John Kincaide Stadium and Mineral Wells-Ram Stadium to land in the semi-finals.
In the Final Four, the Tomato Bowl won out over El Paso-R.R. Jones Stadium, which advanced the facility to the finals.
The Jacksonville Independent School District held a special ceremony to recognize the honor prior to the start of the Indians’ first home football game on Aug. 29.
