Holmon Wiggins discusses his coaching style as Texas A&M's new OC

Much of the drama this offseason centers on new Texas A&M offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins, who takes over as the Aggies' play-caller after Collin Klein departed for Kansas State. Wiggins served as coach Mike Elko's wide receivers coach since the 2024 season, while also operating as one of the program's ace recruiters.
Still, Elko's choice to elevate Wiggins to a role that, on paper, would have been better suited for a veteran coach with play-calling experience has been roundly criticized by a host of national media members, feeling that, no matter how stacked the Aggies' 2026 roster may be, redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed play in Holmon Wiggins's scheme will determine A&M's chances of making it back to the College Football Playoff.
On Tuesday, Holmon Wiggins and new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill spoke to the media for the first time after five preseason practices, and when asked about his coaching style ahead of the 2026 season, Wiggins, who served as Collin Klein's co-OC over the last two seasons, is confident that his extensive background as a wide receivers coach, which included developing former Alabama and 2020 Heisman winner DeVonta Smith, will aid in his decision making.
"I think pretty much any good coach is going to try to tailor everything that they do to the players and the personnel that they have."
Marcel Reed, who threw for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last season, will now be passing to what this writer considers to be the most complete wide receiver rotation in Texas A&M history, led by junior Mario Craver, and now including Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, whose 6'4", 215-pound frame provides the much-needed size to a corps built on speed and physicality.
Wiggins' background as former Alabama coach Nick Saban's WR coach and assistant head coach not only taught the new Aggie OC the importance of leadership, but also everything that goes into being a good and effective coach, from start to finish, including utilizing and developing every offensive playmaker.
"Coach Saban used to say it's hard to be a good coach if you don't have good players."
"The biggest thing is putting our best 11 out there. … We're going to find ways to get playmakers on the field."
