The Colorado Buffaloes suffered a third straight loss on Saturday night, falling 29-7 to No. 12 Texas Tech. But the biggest story wasn't Deion Sanders' team crumbling for a fourth straight season. Texas Tech fans traveling to Boulder stumbled upon a surprise Friday night at the hotel bar. According to a report by The Athletic, a print out of Colorado’s plays and game plan notes was right there for the taking.
This happened at the Buffs’ team hotel, the Omni Interlocken Hotel in Broomfield, which is right up US Highway 36, the main highway into Boulder. “Powered by the gogo,” read the cover sheet, referencing the Go-Go offense run by Colorado offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, according to a message board post by RedRaiderSports.com.
What was included was the Buffs' opening script of plays, which was compared in a social media post. How does this happen with proprietary CU football info? That's the question Roundtable asked team sources, who were aware of the playbook leak, but had no further comment about the situation.
The Omni Interlocken Hotel was confirmed as the spot this was found. But were the plays legit? Check out the tape and see for yourself here. The leaked photos included “series openers” with 17 plays being scripted.
Colorado took a 7-3 halftime lead over the reigning Big 12 champs. The second half was a much different story with the Buffs being held scoreless. Utah quarterback Isaac Wilson made his first career start at CU, putting together a nine-play, 75-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. He ended the game with four interceptions in one of the worst homecoming games in CU history. A Colorado spokesman declined comment on the matter.
Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire told The Athletic on Sunday that he "hadn’t seen any of the photos of the playbook before the game," and pointed to Colorado’s success on its opening drive. The Red Raiders scored 29 unanswered points in 55:29 of game time on Saturday.
After the loss, Coach Prime expressed frustration with the offense, saying one position has been struggling. Many assumed he was referring to the quarterback position, but Sanders refused to say. He made another early-season change at quarterback for the second consecutive season.
It's important to note, Sanders wasn't asked about the leaked playbook in the 18 minutes he was at the podium after the game.
Colorado enters a bye week before welcoming No. 13 Utah into Boulder. The second matchup with a Top 25 foe in the middle of the season.
