How much does Florida spend on its football roster?

Florida is spending like a program that expects to compete for an SEC championship.
The Athletic estimates the Gators had between $31 million and $41 million available to assemble their 2026 roster, putting Florida among the 15 biggest spenders in the Power Four (and Notre Dame).
That kind of money is needed to compete in the SEC, where six other teams — Texas, LSU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Alabama — eclipse Florida's budget. Florida’s estimated midpoint sits around $36 million, putting the Gators in the same neighborhood as Michigan and ahead of programs such as Georgia, Auburn and South Carolina.
The Athletic’s numbers are broader than traditional NIL spending. The estimates are intended to capture the amount of money programs had available to build their 2026 rosters, including "athletic department revenue, booster contributions and other program-controlled sources."
Outside endorsement deals that are not managed or controlled by the football program are not included. That distinction matters, but the larger takeaway is that Florida is investing heavily in its roster.
It's no surprise that 11 of the top-20 spots in this study come from the SEC. The conference’s average estimated roster budget falls between $33 million and $38 million, putting Florida right around the league’s expensive standard.
Florida also compares well with several programs that have been among the SEC’s most successful in recent years. Georgia is estimated between $31 million and $34 million, while Auburn sits between $31 million and $35 million and South Carolina between $32 million and $35 million.
The top of the sport operates in another spending tier. Ohio State carries the highest estimate at $49 million-$54 million. Oregon, Texas, LSU, Texas A&M and Miami all sit around or above the $45 million mark.
The Athletic also found a strong relationship between roster spending and postseason expectations. Programs with at least a 50% projected chance of reaching the College Football Playoff averaged between $41 million and $46 million in estimated roster spending, while teams below a 5% chance averaged between $19 million and $23 million. Those numbers are not exact.
The Athletic contacted more than 70 coaches, general managers, personnel directors, athletic directors, agents and other sources while compiling its estimates, and noted that exact roster budgets are closely guarded. People inside programs can also have reasons to either downplay or inflate the amount of money available.
Still, the estimates provide a useful look at the financial expectations surrounding Jon Sumrall’s first Florida roster.
The Gators may not be spending at the Ohio State or Texas level, but a budget that could reach $41 million puts Florida firmly among college football’s bigger investors. The next question is whether that investment produces results.
