Texas Tech comes off its first Big 12 Conference championship and CFP visit, losing to Oregon in the quarterfinals after a first-round bye. The Red Raiders’ turbulent offseason centered around Cincinnati transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who eventually left the program following a protracted legal battle over his eligibility in the wake of gambling allegations. Will Hammond, back from an ACL injury, won the starting job after playing eight games as the backup in 2025, and has running back Cameron Dickey, a Doak Walker Award semifinalist last season after running for 1,124 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Abilene Christian opened at No. 14 in the FCS Coaches Poll before a 21-14 loss a week ago at then-No. 20 Lamar. John David Black threw for 142 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Tucker Parks, who started and threw interceptions on two of the team’s first four drives. Alex Broome ran for 75 yards on 14 carries while Cristian Driver and Romelo Boykin caught TD passes.
The Red Raiders lead the all-time series 7-3 and narrowly escaped their last meeting at home in 2024, squeezing out a 52-51 overtime victory.
