Running back Makhi Hughes added 98 rushing yards and a touchdown as head coach Willie Fritz and the Cougars earned their third consecutive victory dating back to last season.

Southern enters at 1-1 after bouncing back from a season-opening loss to Alabama State with a 34-15 victory over Kentucky State. Quarterback Christian Johnson threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns in the win, while running back Trey Holly rushed for 99 yards and two scores. Houston has won both previous meetings between the programs, most recently cruising to a 62-13 victory in 2013.
