Iowa State vs No. 21 Iowa preview:

The Cyclones are in their first season under head coach Jimmy Rogers, who took over after Matt Campbell left Iowa State for Penn State. After beating Southeast Missouri State 38-10 in the season opener, the Cyclones are trying to start 2-0 for the third consecutive year (after doing so only once from 2013-23).

Iowa State kicker Kyle Konrardy, who made 54-yard field goals to lift his team to wins over Iowa in 2024-25, returns as a redshirt junior.

He is among few holdovers on a roster that includes 83 new players and no returning starters. Senior quarterback Jalen Raynor arrives after starting 36 games for Arkansas State from 2023-25. Raynor rushed for two TDs in the opener while completing 8 of 16 passes for 184 yards and two TDs.

“I don’t know if I ever really pictured myself playing here, to be honest, but the opportunity presented itself," Raynor said. "And ultimately it’s been a great decision.”

Iowa is led by Kirk Ferentz, who enters his 28th season as the most experienced active head coach in FBS, and the Hawkeyes entered 2026 at No. 18 in the AP rankings, their highest in five years to start a season.

Senior running back Kamari Moulton starred in Week 1, rushing for two TDs and a career-high 183 yards on 11 carries during a 40-0 win over Northern Illinois.

Three quarterbacks played in the opener with the starting role seemingly an open competition between senior Hank Brown and junior Jeremy Hecklinski.

"It’s been really close, and I think it just continues to be that way," Ferentz said. "So, it’s good, it’s healthy. But you have to pick somebody."
